Mohamed Shammoon Ameen, widely known as Shumi, is a Maldivian dive professional, marine operator, and the founder of Scuba Butler. With nearly three decades of experience in diving, luxury hospitality, and marine operations, Shumi has built a respected career working across some of the Maldives’ most recognized resorts, liveaboards, and private superyachts.
His journey began through underwater exploration and archaeology before moving into professional diving and tourism. Over the years, he developed extensive expertise in scuba instruction, nautical navigation, marine safety, expedition planning, and guest experience management. His passion for the ocean and deep understanding of Maldivian waters eventually led him into leadership roles including Dive Instructor, Cruise Director, Captain, Operations Manager, and Private Dive Guide.
Throughout his career, Shumi has worked aboard luxury vessels and private yachts catering to ultra-luxury travelers, international VIPs, and UHNW clientele seeking exclusive experiences in the Maldives. His work with globally recognized yachts and premium hospitality operations has given him valuable insight into the expectations of high-end travelers, particularly in areas such as personalized service, privacy, safety, and attention to detail.
Shumi has worked with several notable liveaboards and yachts including M/Y Flying Fox, M/Y ACE, M/Y Aqua Marina, M/Y Atlas, M/Y Vector, and M/Y Octopus, while also spending many years with renowned operations such as Aggressor Fleet in both the Maldives and Sri Lanka. These experiences allowed him to guide divers and travelers from around the world through some of the Indian Ocean’s most remarkable underwater environments.
In 2021, Shumi founded Scuba Butler with the vision of creating personalized, high-quality diving and marine experiences focused on the southern atolls of the Maldives. The company specializes in tiger shark diving, pelagic encounters, channel diving, and tailor-made marine expeditions around destinations such as Fuvahmulah, Huvadhoo Atoll, and Addu Atoll. Built on years of practical industry experience, Scuba Butler combines luxury hospitality with authentic local knowledge to provide guests with safe, memorable, and professionally guided adventures.
A highly experienced dive professional, Shumi holds numerous internationally recognized certifications, including PADI MSDT Specialty Instructor and SSI Advanced Dive Control Specialist Instructor qualifications, alongside certifications in nitrox diving, emergency response, equipment servicing, and nautical navigation. He is also trained in water sports instruction and marine vessel operations.
Beyond tourism, Shumi remains passionate about marine conservation and environmental awareness. Through his work, he aims to encourage responsible diving practices and help visitors develop a deeper appreciation for the Maldives’ marine ecosystems. His experience working with multicultural guests from across the world, including time spent teaching diving in Austria, has also given him a strong understanding of international hospitality standards and cultural sensitivity.
During his time in Austria, Mohamed Shammoon Ameen established and operated his own dive business, gaining valuable international experience in dive instruction and guest services before returning to the Maldives in 2008 to continue his career in marine tourism and luxury hospitality.
Today, through Scuba Butler, Shumi continues to share the underwater beauty of the Maldives with travelers seeking meaningful, personalized, and world-class diving experiences.
